  • Let's talk about what the Bill of RIghts is. The bill of rights is a list of 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. The constitution is what formed our national government, and an amendment is a change or addition to the constitution to improve it's quality.
  • Basically, the Bill of Right's spell out our American Rights in relation to our government
  • "I don't agree with being drafted for war. I can say this without the government getting involved."
  •
  • We are now going to talk about 5 of the 10 amendments, starting with the first Amendment. This states that all people have freedom to practice whatever religion they want, freedom of speech, press, assembly, and petition.
  • "I am a Christian, but my friend is buddhist. We are both free to practice different religions."
  • "I am having a superbowl party Sunday! The government can't control with who/when/or why I host a gathering."
  • Ever heard of the Bill of Rights? Let's learn about it!
  • Next, we have the Second Ammendment, the Right To Bear Arms. This means that we have the right to own a weapon, to use only in the event that we have to protect ourselves or our property from unwanted intruders.
  • Intruder! Get out!
  • Next we have the third amendment, Quartering of Troops. This one states that in times of war, the government can't force me to let a soldier stay in my home, unless I say I am comfortable doing so.
  • I need a place to stay the night.
  • You can't stay here, sorry!
  • The fourth amendment protects people from "unreasonable searches and seizures" by the government. This means that the police can't search my house without a legitimate reason, or a warrant. ( A warrant is a document written by a judge, giving the police the right to search my home because they have specific reasons to believe I did something wrong).
  • Let us in! We are here to investigate!
  • Do you have a warrant? Otherwise, no!
  • The 5th amendment states that we all have the right to a jury trial when accused of a crime. This means that I can (or don't have to) speak or testify against myself when being charged for a crime. It also says that I can't be punished twice for the same crime.
  • Your Honor, I'm innocent!
