  • The Magna Carta is a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England. The Magna Carta led to the American Revolution by inspiring and supporting actions defending liberty. The rights embedded in the Magna Carta were rights that the colonists believed should be equal among themselves and the Englishmen.
  • Enlightenment (1685)
  • Salutary Neglect is an informal policy of the British government where trade laws and government supervision was not strictly enforced on American Colonies. This lead to the American Colonies becoming accustomed to governing themselves, contributing to the causes of the American Revolution.
  • English Bill of Rights (1689)
  • Navigation Acts were a series of laws meant to limit Englands carrying trade to English ships. The Navigation Acts caused resentment in the colonies, leading to the American Revolution.
  • Sugar Act (1764)
  • The Enlightenment was a cultural and intellectual movement where people started questioning authorities rather than blindly following orders and there was a peak in scientific research. The ideas of the Enlightenment supported Americas claim that it should have more rights to self-governing, leading to the American Revolution
  • The Bill of Rights is the first ten additions to the US Consititution which ensured several rights including freedom of speech, assembly, and worship. Although the Bill of Rights was meant to free Americans, it was influenced by British doctrines and literature. Americans became irritated by the constant taxes and wrongful convictions, leading to the American Revolution.
  • The Sugar Act was passed with the goal of raising revenue for Britain to pay part of the cost of a standing army in North America. The Sugar ACt caused Americans to believe that Parliament was goind to use them for profit and ignore their rights as British citizens. This conflict and agression helped lead up to the American Revolution.
