- My name is Jonas. These are my friends Asher and Fiona. In our community, nobody has memories, feelings, or the ability to see color. But some people are different. The Giver and I, we have to capacity to see beyond. But I did not know this until The Ceremony of Twelve.
- At the Ceremony, I was selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. When the Chief Elder mentioned the capacity to see beyond, I knew I had it. Fiona's hair... changed. Just for an instant.
- I met with the Giver, and noticed that he had the same light eyes as I did. He showed me the memories and helped me to see... color. At the same time, I began to feel.
- I could no longer look Fiona in the eyes without blushing myself. She grew worried, thinking my flushed face was sickness. I could not bear to stay in the community, with its horrid rules.
- I took Gabriel, a newchild with eyes like mine, and left the community. Once the search planes gave up, my only fear was starvation
- The thought of the community receiving my memories, and Fiona, kept me going.
- I knew one day I'd see her again...
