  • You didn't pay your debt, so we are confiscating your farm!
  • After the American Revolution ended, the American economy was incredibly poor. Farmers during the war lost their crops and items to soldiers (which stole them for personal gain). The government, in debt, raised taxes. In rural Massachusetts, debtors seized farms and possessions of farmers that could not pay their debts.
  • Oh no!
  • The farmers, understandably unhappy, began to protest and show their unhappiness in various ways. They closed courts and liberated debtors from jail. Later, under a farmer named Daniel Shays, the farmers revolted in full power.
  • We're unhappy with the way they are treating people in debt, especially farmers, so we are rebelling!
  • The rebellion was put out, but what if more occur? So many people are unhappy. America is in debt and the Articles of Confederation are not working.
  • The rebellion was eventually put out by the Massachusetts government, but it left a lasting impact on the history of the United States. The government understood that as things were, conditions in America were unstable. The Articles of Confederation were not working, so national leaders decided to edit the articles.
  • We need to edit the Articles of Confederation.
