- The Compromise of 1850 meant that California was a free state, slaves could no longer be sold in D.C., popular sovereignty was now in place to decide whether a state would be free or slave, TX-NM border dispute was solved and the fugitive slave act was enacted.

- With the publish of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", tensions increased with more protests from the North and angered Southerners.

- Slavery was now able to be decided with popular sovereignty so people decided to go there and vote illegally. They attacked antislavery settlers and damaged businesses. In response John Brown killed 5 men.

- The Dred Scott V. Sandford case was a case made by Mr. Scott because since him and his master lived in free territory, he thought of himself as a free man. The court ruled that black people were not citizens and could not sue federal court, Scott was not a free man, and the Kansas-Nebraska act/ MO compromise were unconstitutional.
- On October 16, 1859, John Brown and 21 men attempted to attack Harper's Ferry to take and distribute weapons among slaves in order to end slavery. But it ended in utter failure with John being hanged for treason. Northerners viewed him as a martyr and the Southerners were leaning more towards secession.

- The election of 1860 is when Lincoln was elected president of the United States. Many southerners did not want him to win, so they did not put his name in the ballets.
