  • Looking back at 2020, it is clear there have been several monumental moments that will define this year in history. The murder of George Floyd and the consequent protests continue to be remembered in Minneapolis and across the world. Coronavirus has rampaged internationally, and hasn't been adequately fought by the current president. Back to you, Josh...
  • ...and then I realized that my anxiety got really bad about every month and I got a bunch of other random symptoms, and once I started keeping track it became really clear.
  • You have no idea how good that sounds to hear. Thank you so much.
  • Yes, this sounds like a rather severe form of PMDD.
  • Okay, I'll write that up and explain how you will begin treatment.
  • Alright - you have several options here. Zoloft, Prozac, or Sarafem will help if your symptoms are mostly mental. Yaz or other birth controls will help if your symptoms are mostly physical. In my opinion, Zoloft is the best option because you also have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and this medication will help ease the symptoms of that.
  • Zoloft sounds good, then.
  • Finally the day arrived; my doctor's appointment. I went in at eight in the morning for the meeting at nine so I would have time to review my notes. Over the past three months I had recorded how I felt. Looking back on them was horribly depressing.
  • I'm happy for you, honey. Hopefully things will get better.
  • Mom - she said I definitely have PMDD! I'm not happy I have it, obviously, but oh my god, I'm so glad I'm not going insane! This is epic!
  • Once I got in the office, I immediately told my mom to leave. I knew Dr. O'Laughlin very well, and I didn't want to re-explain every single way I was mentally unstable in front of my mom again. It would just make it more humiliating for me and depressing for her.
  • Yeah, I'll tell you if you're acting any different. This is great news, Wes. Things are going to get better.
  • Thank you!I appreciate it.
  • As I explained my symptoms, Dr. O'Laughlin began to look more and more concerned. When I was finished, she launched into a lengthy explanation of what I could medically do about my situation.
  • It's weird - I just feel a little unsettled by how calm I am. I feel like something should be going wrong.
  • It's perfectly natural for things to feel a little weird as your body adjusts. You seem to be heading down the right path.
  • I was professionally diagnosed with PMDD. I had never felt more validated in my life. For so long, I thought I was going insane. A weight lifted from my chest as I drove to the drugstore to pick up my medication.
  • I started taking one pill a day, but there wouldn't be any good effects until two. I was given specific instructions to monitor how different my mood was, which included the people closest to me checking in on me. Hayden was especially important. For the first few days I had severe headaches, but those went away as quickly as they came. No panic attacks were worth a headache or two.
  • I increased to two pills the following week and was instructed to stay at that level for another week. My brain had to get used to chemical balance before we could move any further. At this point, I started to feel a slight difference; everything seemed to be slowing down, and I could keep track of my thoughts more easily.
