  • People who were living in poverty were taken to these workhouses in order to get shelter and food for free. This money was from the people who had high paying jobs but they weren't happy about this. The workhouses would give these people someplace to work even though the living conditions were awful.
  • The tax payers were very annoyed that their money was going to the workhouses so the government made a rule to reduce the amount of money going into the workhouses, this led to awful living conditions and poor health. The government also stopped outdoor relief which was the financial support when you live in your own home. The amount of workhouses were also cut to make bigger ones that could home hundreds of people.
  • The hours in the workhouse were long and hard. A typical day in the summer would consist of, getting up at 6 , eat till 7. Work until 12 and eat till 1. Work till 6 and eat till 7 and then sleep at 8. In the winter it would be nearly the same but they would work 1 less hour in the morning. Jobs for the women would consist of, laundry, spinning, scrubbing and cleaning. For the men it would be, breaking stones apart, working in the fields, grinding corn and chopping wood.
