  • After being alerted to a few riots in Harlem, the Narrator witnesses people protesting against the poor living conditions and the death of a member of the black community, Tod Clifton, by setting a fire to the town.
  • U THERE! STOP THAT AT ONCE!
  • The Narrator decides to help the black men and women protest against the government.They decide to raid a hardware shop which they there steal all the Kerosene.

  • Soon later, the Narrator realizes what the kerosene was being used to burn down the apartments of the black community.
  • Where will you live? (Ellison 422)
  • You call this living? It's the only way to get rid of it man... (Ellison 423)
  • The Narrator decides to help the protesters burn out all of the apartments and evacuate the women and children.
  • This here's my own apartment. And ain't the bedbugs going to get a surprise. (Ellison 424)
  • After lighting the apartments on fire, the Narrator did not see the men who he had worked with, as he only saw a large crowd. He quickly flees the scene with a gut feeling telling him to run, because he hears someone call him by his brotherhood name.
  • Woman, who you say that is? (Ellison 426)
  • Brother ain't it wonderful. You said you would lead us , you really said it...(Ellison 426)
  • Ras's men find out that the Narrator was here. They begin to search for him.
