  • Once I conceived of a plan to kill the old man, the idea haunted me day and night

  • The antagonist of the story is the narrator. His main goal through out the entire story is to prove his sanity by describing how carefully he planed and carried out the murder of an old man. He begins by telling the listener that the motive for murder is nothing more than the sight of the old man's "vulture eye".
  • Climax

  • The narrator gets hired by the Old Man to take care of him. He has the audacity to be kind to the Old Man for a whole week. The narrator watched him sleep every night to check and see if the eye is open. Every morning he comes into the Old Mans bedroom and asks him how he slept to see if he suspects anything. He a small crevice of the lantern to see if the Old Mans eye is open.
  • Falling Action
  • I'm so intelligent. No one will ever find out
  • The narrator starts laughing thinking his plan is about to work greatly. The old man wakes up vehemently wondering whos in his house. He sits there for 1 hour not knowing that the narrator is right in front of him. The narrator hears what he thinks is the old mans heart beat, but then learns farther on that it's actually his. The narrator starts fearing that the neighbors are going to start hearing the heart beat.
  • Resolution
  • I cant believe he had the audacity to do that

  • The narrator couldn't take it the noise anymore. He yells and leaps into the old man's room; smothers the old man with a mattress
  • The narrator bring the old man into the bathtub after suffocating him. He places him in the bathtub and starts chopping him up. He takes the body parts out and hides them under the floorboards. The police start knocking on the door and when the narrator answers they they said they had heard a shriek. He invites them inside confident that their not going to find anything.
  • The narrator was feeling overwhelmed about the "heart beat" thinking the policeman were going to hear it. The narrator confesses to murdering the old man, because of the guilt he started feeling.
