  • In 1787 leaders of states gathered to create the constitution, a set of rules for the government to follow, the constitution distributed power from the federal government into three branches. The executive, legislative, and judicial. All of the branches have checks and balances over the other two.
  • The judicial branch is the U.S. court system. Its function is to interpret the laws. Justices are judged by the supreme court. The executive branch names the judges. The supreme court gets about 7,000 petitions each year. The supreme court hears about 80 to 100 cases every term. Some cases become landmark cases. This means that they have lasting impacts on the U.S. government and individual landmark rights.
  • The executive branch wants to name new officials and judges. Congress can confirm or reject them. Congress also can approve or deny international treaties the president has signed. Both of the houses of congress are needed to impeach or approve the president. If an official does something illegal then congress can charge them. If the president or any official is found guilty then they might be impeached or kicked out of office. The executive branch carries out the laws that congress passes. The president is the leader of the executive branch, he makes sure the military and government do their job according to the law. The president can veto or reject bills from congress or sign them into law. A two-thirds majority vote of both houses of congress can override a veto.
