  • A palmetto is a type of palm tree called a fan palm, with leaves in the shape of fans that are arranged in a rounded shape. They are common in the southeast and the leaves were used for the roofs of homes.
  • Homes made from wood, raised three feet off the ground to keep the water and animals out. They did not have walls, and the roof was made of wood and thatched with palmetto or palm leaves.
  • Flat-bottomed dugout canoes were hollowed out from a single tree log. They were heavy and had a flat bottom that could glide through the shallow, swampy wetlands.
