  • Charlie and Pedroito
  • The city was Jumping with excitement. The Boston Red Sox clinched the World Series for the first time in 86 years.
  • YEARS For the Bean!
  • “Can I go down and watch the parade?” asked Charlie. He jumped and slid across the floor like a major league star, stopping sharply at the large apartment window overlooking Marlborough Street. “Sure,” said his Mom, “just be careful. It’s busy down there.”
  • Charlie rode the elevator down, 3, 2, 1. Ding ding ding ding ! The streets were filled with blue, red, and white. Faces crowded the sidewalks, shouting, laughing, and buzzing with anticipation. Charlie could hardly wait to get outside and see.
  • “Hey, little Mush. Where did you come from?” said Charlie. He crouched down and picked up the little dog that was whimpering quietly near the front door of his apartment. He was soft, fuzzy and black all over. His big, dark eyes were almost totally covered with curly hair. “Don’t worry, pup, I will take care of you.”
  • MiYoot Market
  • Charlie took the leash dangling from the dog’s neck and headed toward Newbury Street. He stopped at Miyoot market. Leo waved at him with a smile. “Hi Charlie! Whose your new friend guy?”
  • “His name is Pedroito,” Charlie decided. His favorite pitcher was Pedro Martinez so he decided that was the perfect name for the dog on this day of Red Sox celebration. Leo grabbed a bowl of water and gave his new buddy a drink. Charlie liked having a dog. It made him happy.
  • Charlie walked all the way down Newbury Street toward the Public Garden. Usually, he looked at the products in the store windows, but on this day, he looked at his reflection in the windows instead. He liked the way he looked walking his dog. The swan boats were in the water today. They ran to get in line. “I’m sorry. No dogs allowed on the boats,” said Cheri. “But here’s a little treat for your dog.” Cheri put her open hand down to Pedroito’s nose and he gobbled up the tiny treat.”
  • Charlie continued over the bridge to the Charles River. Pedroito pulled at the leash to watch the sailboats weave on the water. “Hold on to your dog,” cried a teenage boy whizzing by in his car. Charlie was getting hungry. He headed toward Kenmore Square. “Sausage, hold the peppers, please,” Charlie ordered. Joe had biggest and best sandwiches outside Fenway Park. “Here you go,” said Joe. “And here’s a World Series Red Sox pin for your dog.” Charlie reached down to Pedroito’s neck and placed the pin on his collar.
  • CITGO
  • Charlie and Pedroito slowly walked back toward the apartment. They rode up the elevator and into his home. “How was it?” asked his Mom from the den. “Fun!” cried Charlie as he headed directly into his room. They were exhausted and both fell asleep on Charlie’s bed.
  • Dingity dong! Charlie shot up from his bed. He heard his Mom talking to someone over the intercom. He looked out the window down onto Marlborough Street and watched a young boy go door to door. Charlie looked down at Pedroito sleeping on his quilt and felt sad. He knew what he had to do.
  • He ran out of his room, out the front door, and all the way down Marlborough Street. Charlie called to the boy at the corner. “Hey, are you looking for a lost dog?” The young boy looked up and Charlie could see he had been crying. “YES!” the boy said. “C’mon, follow me,” said Charlie. Charlie took Henry upstairs to find Pedroito. The pup jumped, barked and wagged his tail with excitement when Henry came into the room. Charlie was sad to see Pedroito go but he knew he had done a good thing. That night, Charlie dreamed about the Red Sox and a new puppy to call his own. Charlie learned that even though it may hurt, it is important to do the right thing.
