- Kit was a girl who lived on a very small island. Her beloved grandpa died and passed away. Also, Kit was not old enough to live on her own in Barbados, so she had to move across the world to her Aunt's house. Because of this, Kit had to move to Connecticut and ride on a boat for many hours. Kit also was not sure how she felt about moving to a completely different place.
- To begin with, when Kit was on the ship a little girl dropped her doll. Kit was an excellent swimmer because she lived on the island for so long. Also, the girl dropped her doll Kit dived into the freezing water, and grabbed the doll. Nat dived into the water with Kit because he thought she wouldn't know how to swim because most girls back then couldn't swim.
- A women on the ship said that Kit was a witch because of the myth that anyone who could swim very well and float had to be a witch. Also, Kit was very mad because she just saved a girls doll, but everyone thought that she was crazy and selfish. Nat who went in the water with Kit because he thought that Kit would drown in the water, but when he got out of the water he was very mad at Kit and yelled at her.
