  • Why I went to College By: Jackie Johnson
  • Knowledge is power, girls! You will go to college!
  • Growing up, my mother always reinforced the idea of college to my sister and me. She always said that by having a college degree, it would ensure we would have the kind of job that we wanted. The kind where we could live comfortable and do what we loved. Her encouragement never stopped throughout our schooling.
  • Over the years, I never excelled through school. I was always "average" and content with my 3.0 GPA. I never sought out to attend a big, fancy university or trade school. Instead, I decided I wanted to go to our local community college and find out what I wanted to do there.
  • Rubidoux High School
  • A few years later, I decided that college was not an option for me. I was eager to get out into the working world and make my own money. I was hired on as a receptionist for a logistics company and I grew to LOVE it. I was also the assistant for one of our Vice Presidents, so the opportunity to grow with the company was definitely there. Plus, I love meeting and talking to new people. I was very optimistic and happy with my new journey.
  • Hello! How may I help you?
  • Hello, is your company hiring?
  • One day, an elderly man walked into our office inquiring about job opportunities with the company. I explained that we did not have any open positions. The man went onto explain that he desperately needed a job and that he would be willing to do anything for a paycheck. He explained he did not have any college background and was a former United States Marine. The conversation left my heart broken into pieces. I felt so sorry for the man and I wish I could help more than I could. It was that moment where I decided that I needed to go to college and educate myself. I told myself I never wanted to have to beg a company for employment.
  • Later that evening, the only thing I could think of was the older man who was desperate for employment. It made me consider my life and my decisions. After having an extensive conversation with my mother, I decided that I needed to enroll into college and make something of myself. The very next day, I applied at National University and was accepted a few days later.
  • Exactly three and a half years later, I graduated National University with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. I have never been prouder of myself! This was the biggest accomplishment that I have ever made for myself. I felt that all my hard work finally paid off. My next adventure would be to go on to earn ym master's degree and teaching credential.
  • Today, I am currently working on finishing my master's degree and teaching credential. Also, I am still currently employed at the logistics company. I have been an employee for six years now and time has flown by. I often reflect on my accomplishments and I am still stunned at how far I have come. I am living proof that anyone can graduate college. This is the greatest accomplishment of my life thus far. I think about the older man who changed my life forever whenever I feel doubtful in myself. He is the reason why I enrolled and decided to educate myself. If I could see him today I would thank him for opening my eyes and pushing me to do something I would not have done before. I am excited to see where life takes me! Thank you for reading my story!
