William H. Russell was a businessman in the early 1860s. He had an idea that people could ride horses and ponies in order to deliver mail faster.
On April 3rd, 1860, the Pony Express was created. Riders will carry mail across the country.
On April 13, 1860, I, Sam Hamilton, carried the first eastern Pony Express mail into Sacramento.
The fastest run for the Pony Express was when President Lincoln's first address to Congress was delivered to Sacramento in March, 1861. It took 7 days and 17 hours after leaving St. Joseph
After the transcontinental telegraph was invented, the need for the Pony Express was gone. On October 26, 1861, it was closed
