Comic strip about Math and after math.

Kuvakäsikirjoitus Teksti

  • When Lensey was in second grade, she had a hard time at school since she could barely understand the eastern part of China's dialect. She then discovered that she suffered from abacus anxiety.
  • 请把四乘以五...(Multiply four by five, please)
  • 老师说的是四七吗?(Did the teacher say seven or four?)
  • Years later, her family emigrated to America, where she experienced a harsh cultural shock. When she entered American schools, her best subject was math. After a while, she realized her classmates found her weird because "apparently", in America, it was unusual for a girl to be good at math.
  • Why shouldn't I be?
  • How come you're so good at math?
  • You're a GIRL!
  • Later on, she noticed that many girls got good grades in elementary school, but their grades began to slip when they entered middle school. By then, they were getting interested in boys, and they didn't want the boys to think they were weird.
  • Hey there, cutie!
  • Luckily, she learned that very late, which save her from giving in her talent. Eventually, she got into a decent college to pursuit a career in mathematics. But, at the end, Lensey took up freenlance writing because that actually fired her imagination.
  • I was finally able to finish my new book!
  • With this story, we could understand that China's culture differs a lot from the one of the US. For example in how they view girls who are good at math. And I could also learn that women shouldn't be view as inferior because of their mathematical skills since society is putting (not so much these days, tho) incredible pressure on them to find them attractive enough, and saying these things makes them resign their talent naively.
  • But today, attitudes are finally beginning to change... Women are less afraid to do well in math, and many go into science and math in college (Actually, one of Lensey Namioka's daughter is a computer scientists and the other is an engineer).
