  • In the Berlin conference we were just watching, they were going through the scramble for Africa. This is where all the European powers were fighting for African land. right now we are in British south Africa, one of the most important colonies.
  • How did the British manage to get such an important, resourceful piece of land like south Africa amongst the other European nations?
  • Well they ran into some problems at first. The Dutch also wanted south Africa so they sent Boer's to settle here while south Africa was under British influence.
  • And I imagine the British started a war?
  • Well not necessarily, this time it was the Dutch. The Boer's started the Great Trek. this was a movement of several thousand Boer's moving away from British influence. They took over new territory, and engaged in fighting with African tribes that already lived there. They eventually moved onto fighting the actual British and started the Boer War. the British eventually won creating where we are now, the union of south Africa.
  • Even After the Berlin Conference they still couldn't agree on who got what! What were the African tribes that the Dutch fought like?
  • Well, there are many different ones, but perhaps the most famous is the Zulu tribe. They have a great warrior named Shaka. He taught the Zulu people that the quickest way to gain power is too conquer other tribes. Soon the rest of the tribes feared the Zulu tribe and saw them as warriors.
  • Wow, the other tribes must have a lot to worry about between Europe and the Zulus. I still cant believe Europe is trying to take over Africa!
  • Not only Africa, the British are after India too. In fact, we should probably head there now.
  • Oh boy! I'm still jet lagged from the flight here!
  • Only about 3 more days!
  • How much longer?
