- Fred comes to visit scrooge at work. He invites his uncle to Christmas dinner. Scrooge is frustrated, and refuses.
- Scrooge comes home, and gets a visit from the ghost of his business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge of the spirits that will come.
- At night, the first spirit comes to Scrooge. The spirit, also known as Christmas Past, comes to show him the events of the past.
- In the first shadow of the past, Scrooge is taken to the boarding school he went to as a young boy. His sister, Fan, comes to take him home for Christmas, so he does not have to be alone in the school.
- Christmas Past then takes Scrooge to his old work, where his boss, Fezziwig, hosts a grand Christmas Eve party. for the town.
- Past takes Scrooge to one last scene. This scene is much more sad to Scrooge, in which Scrooge's wife splits up with him.
