- The Russo-Japanese War began in 1904 and was fought between Russia and Japan. They were fighting for resources and territory. The Russians lost in 1905 under Tsar Nicholas II

- Bloody Sunday was described as a peaceful protest. Workers and families marched quietly to the Tsar's palace on a Sunday and his guards started shooting and killed many people.

- The civil war took place in 1918 and lasted for two years. Lenin's red army which was led by Leon Trotsky fought against the white army. In the end the Red Army wins and around 14 million people died in the civil war
- Lenin's new economic policy was a mixture of capitalism and socialism. This new policy allowed people to own property privately and all economic decisions were made by the state.
