  • After the successful victory from Troy Odysseus and his men set sail to Ismarus(the home of ciicones )In the city his men raided, killed men and enslaved women, and enjoyed the luxury of being rich. Odysseus had warned his soldiers to leave at once with their riches, but they did not listen. This raised fury among the people of cicones and they planned a counterattack against the greeks. (9.Line 50-70)
  • Theme:¨Sometimes all you need is your strongest people¨
  • ¨The rest of you stay here,my friends-in-arms. I´ll go across with my own ship and crew and probe the natives living over there¨(9.Line 192-194)
  • After sailing the sea for multiple days, Odysseus and his men sailed upon the land of the lotus eaters. The lotus eaters showed them hospitality, unfortunately, the men who ate the flowers forgot they had a home to return to. Odysseus' other men had to pry them off the flowers and tie them to the ships.(9.Line 94-112)
  • Theme:¨Dont put yourself in dangerous situations If you cant handle the pressure¨
  • Continuing their journey of following the lotus eaters' land, they crossed cyclops' territory. The cyclops were limitless creatures that followed no rules or orders from anyone. They all lived in their own separate caves with their respective families. Odysseus and his men stayed on the island for countless days silently watching the cyclops' every move. The third day was the day they encountered the cyclops.(9.Line 118-184)
  • Theme:¨Be polite to those you dont like unless they treat you otherwise¨
  • On the third day, Odysseus and his crew were at the entrance of the caves, where he gave a speech before they had gone inside the caves. Odysseus made sure that not every one of his men went inside and that some stayed outside the cave.(9.Line 192-200)
  • Odysseus had entered the cave with his best fighters and came bearing gifts for the cyclops. Upon entering the say racks of cheeses and young lambs as well as children. Polyphemus The cyclops was sleeping so they waited for him to return.(9. Line 241-265)
  • After Polyphemus woke up and milked his sheep and completed his lengthy chores,he sat down to speak with Odysseus and his men. He had little to no respect for them.(9.Line 266-289)

  • After Polyphemus asked who they were. Odysseus and his men were startled by the outburst of the cyclops, but Odysseus mans up and answers him saying ¨they are men from troy¨(9. line 288-294) and are respected by the gods. Polyphemus tries trapping them, but Odysseus is smart to fall for his tricks.

  • When Polyphemus asks the trick question of where their ship may be. Odysseus responded with Posedian smashing his ship. His answer did not sit well with Polyphemus as he lunged himself at Odysseus' men and brutely killed 2 of them.(9/line 316-322)

  • After Polyphemus was done with his rampage, he started eating the human flesh and washing it down with milk, descending into a deep sleep.(9.line 323-335)
  • Theme::¨When the time is right, plan your attack¨
  • Odysseus thought about drawing his sword out and stabbing the cyclops in his chest, but thought against the idea as the outcome would not be in his favor. As young dawn rose the cyclops had completed his chores and grabbed two more of Odysseus' men and devoured them.(9.line 336 350)

  • Odysseus had an idea to get the cyclops drunk and pass out by offering wine to go with the human flesh he just ate. As Odysseus demanded he drank more the cyclops was starting to feel the effects of the wine as his brain started to spin. Odysseus took the opportunity to go near him and tell him his real ¨Name¨
  • The cyclops immediately jumped up from his drunken state and threatened to kill ¨Nobody and his friends ¨ then passed out seconds later. Odysseus and the rest of his men gathered his men around the cyclops and took to opportunity to stab the cyclops in his eye.(9.Line 412-419)

  • Polyphemus woke up in excruciating pain as Odysseus and his men escaped out of the cave. The other cyclops asked him what was wrong, but they didn't believe what he was saying because all he was chanting was ¨ Nobody killing me¨. (9 line 443-460)
  • Theme:¨When in tough times call out to those your trust¨
  • As Odysseus and his men were running out of the cave they were faced with some other cyclops who were ready to fight against them. Odysseus quickly took care of the situation and they escaped on the ship.(9.line 472-487)
  • Theme:¨Messing with others will always come back and bite you¨
  • While Odysseus and his men were leaving they kept taunting the cyclops which rolled them up in anger, especially Polyphemus.(9.527-536)
  • Theme:¨Sometimes fleeing the scene is better than staying and getting kiiled¨
  • As Polyphemus went back into his cave he sat on his knees praying to his father Posedian that Odysseus never makes is home to Ithaca or to ever see his people again.
  • Posedian heard his prayer and Polyphemus lifted a large boulder threw It and landed near Odysseus. Which drove them away from the island where his other crewmates were waiting for them. (9.597-610
  • When the sun had set Odysseus and his men slept on the beach after eating heady wine and some meat but once the sun rose they made it onto the ships and quickly said away hoping to escape death. (9.620-630)
