- About at midnight the narrator sneaks in the old mans bedroom and watches him sleep.
- Falling Action
- The narrator was about to open the lantern, when his thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprung up from his bed, crying out "who's there?"
- Resolution
- The old man groaned of fear. Then his heart kept beating faster, and faster until finally it stopped.

- The narrator put him in the wall. Then the cops came to talk to the narrator about the screech they heard.
- The narrator confesses to killing the old man. And they take him away.
