  • Fate and free will are shown in the relationship between the central character Odysseus, and the goddess Athena. Athena protects Odysseus and does so much for him because she knows his potential to be great. While Odysseus was on his journey he ends up in Troy. Odysseus did not choose to go to Troy it was fate that pushed him to end up in Troy, and now he knows his destiny. His destiny is to tell his story, be a good husband, and be king of Ithica. This can be found in almost all of the chapters of the Odyssey.
  • Hospitality is shown in book 9, Odysseus abuses the custom of hospitality by stealing cheese and eating it and then saying that out of hospitality, the cyclops were to supply them with what they need and that they would welcome them and give gifts to them.
  • Pride in the Odyssey is shown after they stab the Cyclops' eye in page 455. After, Odysseus and his crew are confronted by the Cyclops they soon realize they are trapped by a big boulder blocking the door. When Odysseus tries to kill the Cyclops he comes up with a plan. They will use Odysseus telling the Cyclops that his name is no one to his advantage. They decide to stab him and hide under sheep to escape. After doing so and escaping Odyssueus shows great pride in what he has just done.
