  • Morning
  • Sir, we had to jump out of the tree. We are getting ready for the war soon.
  • If you hadn't already missed nine meals in the last two weeks...
  • Morning
  • DEVON
  • We bombed central Europe and we've got to do something to celebrate. We haven't got a flag, so I'm going to wear this, as an emblem.
  • What is that thing? You look like a fairy!
  • Afternoon
  • He's going to get away with this.
  • I wore this, you see, because it goes with the shirt and it all ties in together...
  • Isn't that our school's tie?
  • That's probably the strangest tribute this school has had in a hundred and sixty years.
  • Afternoon
  • Mr. Prud'homme asks Finny and Gene where they were at dinner. Finny talks his way out of trouble by explaining that they jumped out of the tree to prepare for the war.
  • We'll jump together to cement our friendship.
  • Are you still afraid to jump out of the tree?
  • There's something unpleasant about that question, isn't there?
  • Afternoon
  • Finny puts on a pink shirt, explaining that it is his 'emblem' to celebrate the U.S. bombing of Central Europe.
  • Evening
  • During tea with the substitute headmaster, Mr. Patch-Withers, Finny discusses the war and the bombing with his wife. She notices that he is wearing the school tie as a belt, but much to Gene's disappointment, Finny is able to talk his way out of trouble.
  • If Finny hadn't come up right behind me, I could've fallen! I could've been killed!
  • After tea, Finny decides they should jump into the river again, and Gene, although unwilling, goes along. Finny decides they should form a society to cement their friendship, and jumping out of the tree is the membership requirement.
  • Gene gets ready to jump, and in an attempt to stall, he turns to tell Finny something. Gene loses his balance, but Finny steadies him, and they both make successful jumps.
  • Later in the evening, Gene realizes that if Finny had not steadied him on the tree, he could have been severely injured or even killed.
