  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that Mankind is its own worst enemy. For example, in the scene when Les Goodman's car started to turn on and off the residents were very quick to accuse Les Goodman of being the monster. A quote from Don "Maybe you better tell us. Nothing's working on this street. Nothing. No lights, no power, no radio. Nothing except one car -- yours!" This evidence supports the theme because, even though they had been friends for 5 years and knew each other for a long time they still fought a friend and started to treat him like an enemy. Another piece of evidence to support this theme is when all the houses lights started to flicker every one starts to shout at and accuse each other. This also supports the theme because, even people that were friends for who knows how many years started to accuse each other and the whole street falls into chaos, everyone is destroying property, hunting down other people, etc, and it all falls into a horrific mess of anger, and accusation, and despair. Lastly, in the scene where the aliens discuss how it is always the same on every street it always falls into chaos. A quote from figure 1, "Throw them into darkness for a few hours, and then you just sit back and watch the pattern." This can also support the theme by showing that all the towns and streets are always the same; everyone becomes each other's enemies; everyone would fight everyone, it was always the same. These were the 3 reasons why I think one major theme of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is Mankind is its own worst enemy.
  • Yeah how come?
  • The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy
  • Hey how come your car starts up but ours doesn't work?
  • I don't what's going on it's not me I swear!
  • It's the kid!
  • No, It's Bob Weaver
  • Nope. It's Don Martin's place
  • They are all the same, just turn off a few of their electronics, lawnmowers, etc. then you sit back and watch the chaos. There is very little variation it's manly the same.
  • Is there any variation?
