  • As a child, Toussaint Breda was a simple slave child. However, his father taught him that he was more than a slave, he was a person, which started his need for education and his fascination with works by Enlightenment thinkers.
  • Meanwhile in France, the French Revolution had begun, and many Enlightenment thinkers enacted the movement for black people and mulattoes to have the “Rights of Man.” However, this angered the plantation owners in the colonies, and the notion was soon retracted.

  • Outraged, the slaves soon rose up and revolted against the French, making Toussaint their new leader, who had been renamed to Toussaint L’Ouverture.

  • Soon, the Jacobins took control of France, beginning what is known as the “Reign of Terror.
  • However, the Jacobins were also concerned with issues like equality, so they brought an end to slavery in the French colonies.
