His lavish spending habits have been catching up to him as he no longer has the money left to run his store.

The new owner of Ikea sees that the store he once considered as an opportunity is closed and out of business, so out of the goodness of his heart, he does the Old Man a favor. He buys his store and lets him continue to manage it, for as long as he sells Ikea's furniture and makes him profit.Moral of the story, Don't judge a book by It's cover. People who are smart with their money often don't spend it on material things, and don't let their money speak for them, smart people spend money to make money.
