Lulu began her fifth-grade year overjoyed with the excitement of finally being in middle school! She loved that she finally had a locker and could walk through the halls with her backpack. At recess, Lulu and her best friend Phoebe played four square with the scary 7th graders. However, to Lulu's surprise, the feared 7th graders pretty much left the 5th graders alone.
Lulu loved to go to school because she was a big rule follower and she liked knowing what was coming next during her school day. She liked having a schedule.
After the most amazing first day of school, the fifth-grade class wandered outside to begin after-school pickup. Lulu's friends slowly started to get picked up by their parents and eventually, Lulu was left all alone waiting outside. Her teacher asked her if her parents planned on picking her up and she said her mom was supposed to. They then brought her into the office so she could wait for her mom there. Her mom finally arrived an hour later and Lulu was on the verge of tears because her perfect first day of school was ruined.
When Lulu got home she wasn’t greeted with her dad like she usually is. This was unusual because when Lulu was in fourth grade her dad would wait for her every day after school and would greet her with a hug and then get her a snack.
Lulu asked her mom where her dad was and her mom said that she needed to talk to her and her brother. Lulu’s younger brother Max was 7 years old and he was in first grade.
Lulu wondered what her mom needed to talk to her and Max about.
Throughout the evening Lulu tried to distract herself by doing her homework, taking a shower and she spent some time planning her outfit for the next day of school, but none of it worked. She felt worried that what her mom wanted to talk to her about was something bad.
Finally, Lulu’s mom asked her and Max to come to the kitchen. When Lulu arrived there she saw her parents sitting at the kitchen table.
“Lulu, Max,” her dad said, “ there is no easy way to say this, so I am just going to say it. Your mom and I love each of you more than anything, but we have decided to get divorced from one another.” Lulu felt a huge ache in her gut and then her throat. She felt like she was just punched in the stomach.
Max just started bawling. Lulu’s mom was comforting Max. Lulu finally blurted out, “You are ruining my life”! Then she ran to her room.
The adjustment was hard. She and Max had different schedules at her dad's house versus her mom's. Lulu didn't like that very much, but the hardest part was telling other people. Lulu was embarrassed that her parents were divorced. She felt like there was something wrong with her and her family.
Lulu struggled to come to terms with her new normal but she noticed her mom and dad were still there at every game she played and every band concert she participated in. They were there sitting together supporting her and Max. Eventually, she learned that her parents loved her and Max as they always did and they were still her parents doing all the parental things.
As Lulu got older she would occasionally meet other kids whose parents were divorced and she noticed how normal she felt around them.
Divorce is hard for kids, but it's not always a terrible thing. Lulu learned that her parents couldn't be married to each other but they still cared for one another. They still loved her and Max like they always did.
Lulu would have preferred her parents stayed together but she figured out that she was still just as important to both her parents and nothing would ever change that. Her family looked different but they were still her family and they loved Lulu as much as ever and she loved them.
