  • Clerc before he met Gallaudet 
  • The start of establishing a deaf school
  • It was 1814 when Gallaudet met and got to know Alice Cogswell. She was deaf and he had hearing, he tried to help with what he could. He thought of the idea to teach deaf children so he left to Europe to expand his knowledge and establish a school for the deaf.
  • On the way to the States
  • Clerc fell into a fire causing it to damage his hearing turning him deaf for the rest of his life. He later entered in school and gained more learning from his teacher. Clerc used his deafness and skills as an advantage towards other deaf people and became a master teacher in Sicard. 
  • OpeningOpening
  • While Gallaudet was in Europe he went to a Sicard meeting later being introduced to Clerc . They became friends, Clerc would invite Gallaudet to class were he taught and gave Gallaudet private deaf lessons. Later asking Clerc if he wanted to establish the school together.
  • Cause and effect of the opening of school for the deaf
  • Sicard was not happy about seeing one of their best teachers go, but they did. So the duo traveled for 51 days to United States allowing knowledge to get known around the city and learn.  Once they arrived they took a year to spread their ideas and raise money making thousands.
  • On April 15, 1817 the first Deaf school of America was established leaving Gallaudet as the founder and Clerc as the co-founder. They accepted 10-51 years of age and became the best hearing and deaf duo. Though the students did in fact developand switch what they learned to better fit their form.
  • GRAND OPENING 
  • After many years they both got married and had children and soon perished after retirement. Gallaudets son established the Gallaudets University and Clercs students continued to spread his teaching and signs as a way to keep ASL known from the start. After the first school more than 30 more were established and in 1960 ASL was seen as a language.
