- The poet introduces the setting by explaining that long ago in a kingdom by the sea, there was a maiden named Annabel Lee. He follows this sentence by introducing Annabel as ' this maiden lived with no other thought then to love, and be loved by me' this line can be a basis of our inference of a perhaps unrequited love.
- Speaker
- The theme in this poem tends to be a combination of feelings, as it is a romantic poem, he talks of the loving times with Annabel in some parts, and begins to blame angels in other parts for her demise. It is very bittersweet, and is in a dark place for the narrator as it is not known if the perspective is correct, or if the meaning of the poem is up for interpretation.
- Imagery
- Many of the examples of symbolism in this poem are to do with Annabelle and her death. However one of the first examples of symbolism is when he refers to his home as a kingdom by the sea, which is a powerful metaphor that can be interpreted in many ways. It is also said that ' a wind blew out of a cloud, chilling. This is another way of saying she caught perhaps influenza.
- Repetition
- The speaker of this poem romanticizes his relationship with Annabel Lee and continues to blame others. We can when he says ' and as all men know in this kingdom by the sea' he is trying to prove that his words and thoughts are justified with others having the same opinion as him, making him seem more credible.
- The imagery in this poem is displayed in many differant ways. When Poe describes the sea, talking about their love being like winged seraphs, but the imagery that stood out to me most was the angles not half as happy in heaven. This line of imagery uses alliteration to paint a picture inside the reader's head.
- The repetition that the poet uses is of the same line ' the kingdom by the sea'. By repeating this, it stays in the readers head, painting a backdrop for the story told. Repetition is also used in end rhymes used throughout the poem. The words sea, lee, me rhyme, and are repeated throughout the poem to create that connection in the back of the reader's mind.
