- Tom Canty is a peasant that lives in Offal Court, the poorest area of London, but dreams of being a prince. A few miles away, the Prince of London, Edward, is the same age, but lives a completely different life, being wealthy, powerful, and spoiled.
- Climax
- When Tom tries to see the Prince, he is mistreated by a guard. The Prince sees and takes him inside. The Prince learns about Tom's life and is interested in it, and they switch clothes because of the interest in each other's lives. Forgetting he is wearing Tom's clothes, he goes out to discipline the guard for hurting Tom, but gets thrown out.
- Falling Action
- The Prince wanders off, and enters the poor part of London. Tom's father thinks he's Tom, and tries to take him away, but he escapes towards the palace. Meanwhile, Tom is mistaken for the Prince, but when he denies it, they simply think he's insane.
- Resolution
- The Prince makes a friend named Miles, who helps him. The Prince is soon kidnapped by John Canty, who still believes he's Tom. He is blamed for a crime he didn't do, and is arrested. He is soon freed by Miles, and taken to his house, but Miles is called an impostor of Sir Hugh's 'dead' brother and is arrested.
- After Miles receives his punishment, he finds the Prince at the coronation. The Prince announces he is the real King, and everybody is confused, because Tom, who they think is the real King, agrees.
- The Prince is asked where the Great Seal is, and after much recollection, he answers the question. He is proven to be correct, and Tom and Prince trade spots, back to their rightful positions. Miles becomes the King's servant, Tom steps down, Prince is crowned King, promising a reign of mercy, and justice is served.
