  • Toussaint L'Ouverture was a leader of the Haitian independence movement during the French Revolution. He was a former Haitian slave who led the only successful slave revolt in modern history.
  • "the first big dramatic push in the Haitian Revolution was to overthrow the slave regime"
  • Toussaint L' Ouverture inspired millions of free and enslaved people of African Decent to seek freedom and equality.
  • The former slaves were able to achieve freedom and equality by political and military force, when they defeated the advances of French, British, and Spanish troops.
  • Toussaint agreed to end the revolt if the French would abolish slavery. France Agreed, however the French soon Accused him of planning another revolt, Arrested him, jailed him
  • The french at Napoleons' orders put him on a ship headed for France. Under a safe transport order. But, Napoleon ordered that Toussaint be placed in a prison dungeon in the mountains.
  • Toussaint was killed by the cold and died in prison in 1803. after his death, Napoleon was isolated to the island of St. Helana where he died in prison.
