- Let's see what I can remember. Heroin, or diacetylmorphine, (AKA smack, dragon, tar) is an illegal opioid drug that was first used as medicine in 1874, but was later found to be dangerously addictive. From certain varieties of poppy plant seeds, the opiate can be used in three ways: injection, snorting, or smoking. Heroin enters the brain rapidly through blood flow and binds to receptor cells. From then it triggers the brain's reward system and releases intoxicating amounts of dopamine, etc. The feeling of pleasure is often combated with both short and long-term consequences. Some long-term effects include: insomnia, collapsed veins, liver and kidney disease, mental disorders, and lung and heart complications. HIV and Hepatitis B+C cases are commonly associated with the drug. Over 9.2 million are current Heroin users and addiction occurs at an extremely fast rate. I also remember from a 2018 report, that teen Heroin use is on the rise, with 2.8% of the teen population under the abuse of opiate drugs. Heroin comes with mass amounts of consequences--both illegally and health-wise.
