  • The Civil War
  • Today we are going to talk about The Civil War and what events took during it! -By Aun Ali
  • The NorthV.S. The South
  • The North had more population, was both richer and more technologically advanced, and most of the nation's manufacturing and banks were in the North. The North also had more farms, it's lands had more minerals, and had more railroad tracks to transport troops and goods more easily. The North's greatest advantage was their new president, Abraham Lincoln, who supported anti-slavery. With its strengths it had its weaknesses. The North had weak military leadership. Most officers resigned and returned to their homes.
  • The NorthV.S.The South
  • The South had great military leadership, was huge in size making it difficult to conquer, and the South only needed to defend until the North grew tired of fighting. With its strengths, came its weaknesses. If the Union gained control of the Mississippi River than the Confederacy would be split in two. The South's economy wasn't built to support a long war as it was mostly based on agriculture and had few factories to produce weapons and supplies. The South also had less railroads making it difficult to transport troops.
  • The Battle of Bull Run
  • We are being overwhelmed! Retreat! Retreat back to Washington!
  • "Yell like Furies!" cried Jackson as they charged at the Union.
  • "Look, there is Jackson with his Virginians, standing ilke a stone wall." said General Bernard Bee.
  • Women Help the War
  • As men went off to war, women ran farms, businesses, and factories, found jobs as nurses, teachers, or government workers, served military forces as messengers, guides, scouts, smugglers, soldiers, and spies, and women volunteered to tend the sick and wounded.
  • After the horrible loss for the Union in the Battle of Bull Run, the Union came up with a plan, the Anaconda Plan. There were three steps to this plan. The first step was to blockade the South's ports and cut off its trade so that the South couldn't export or import needed supplies. Step two and three was to divide and conquer. In detail, step two was to divide the Confederacy by gaining control of the Mississippi River. Step two made it easier to conquer the Confederate States aka step three as the Confederacy would be divided.
  • The Anaconda Plan in Action
  • The Battle of Antietam
  • They are outnumbered! Keep on hitting them with everything you've got. We can win this!
  • Retreat! We are badly outnumbered! Retreat back to Virginia!
  • We'll convince Maryland of joining the Confederacy by entering their land to show that we are not afraid!
  • The Emanicipation Proclamation
  • On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves in Confederate states to be free. This statement had little immediate effect on slavery as the Confederacy ignored the document, but slaves now saw the fight as a crusade for freedom. All slaves turned towards the Declaration of Independence and saw the fight as living up to the words of "all men are created equal."
  • The Battle of Gettysburg
  • We can't seem to find a weakness in their lines of defense! We have to withdraw back to Virginia as we have lost a third of our army!
  • This might be a victory for us but we have lost too many soldiers to be celebrating this win.
  • Control of The Mississippi
  • The Union's campaign seized the Mississippi River, while Admiral David Farragut seized New Orleans and moved up the Mississippi to capture the cities of Baton Rouge and Natchez, thus dividing the Confederates and stopping them from transporting supplies up and down the river.
  • We are low on supplies. We have to eat our horses to survive! We have to surrender Vicksburg! The Confederacy will be divided in two!
  • We are taking Vicksburg slowly but surely! Keep on pushing! While the Union's warships are bombarding Vicksburg with their cannons, we have to attack from land! They won't be able to protect themselves from both sides at once!
  • The Siege of Vicksburg
  • Massachusetts was one of the first states to organize black regiments. The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was the most famous black regiment. The men of this infantry were paid less than white soldiers, thus protesting about the unequal treatment. Congress finally granted black soldiers equal pay but there was still fear that if captured, they might be sold into slavery.
  • The Massachusetts 54th Regiment
  • The assault on Fort Wagner was an impossible mission as troops had to cross 200 yards just to reach the fort and they were being bombarded by rifles and cannons. They lost nearly half of their men so the survivors and the 54th regiment had to retreat but their bravery won them respect. Even with this respect, black soldiers received little training and poor equipment.
  • African Americans at War
  • Grant Invades Virginia The War Ends
  • We have suffered many losses but we won't stop here! We will keep on attacking till the Confederacy's lines break and we will capture the city no matter how long it takes.
  • Their army can take heavy losses but we can't as we don't have the right or enough reinforcements! We have to surrender! We have lost this war!
