  • The beginning is set in Padua. Germio and Hortensio are the suitors of Bianca. Baptista Minola is the father of Bianca and Bianca's older sister Katherina. Both Germio and Hortensio are interested in Bianca however Baptista would let his youngest get married if his oldest isn't married yet. Lucentio and his servant Tranio are watching from a distance as Lucentio begins to like Bianca as well.
  • Why, how now, dame! whence grows this insolence?— Bianca, stand aside.—Poor girl, she weeps! Go ply thy needle; meddle not with her. For shame, thou hilding of a devilish spirit!
  • After learning that Bianca needs a tutor Lucentio pretends to be one to confess his love for Bianca. Tranio then dresses as Lucentio to carry out this plan
  • Hortensio's friend, Petruchio and his servant Grumio have just arrived to Padua and while asking Petruchio why he has came to Padua, he responds that he is looking for a wife. Hortensio sees this as the perfect opportunity to get Katherina wed so he can marry Bianca
  • Yet not so deeply as to thee belongs— Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.
  • In the Baptista's house chaos occurs as Katherine ties her sisters hands asking which suitor she likes best. Once Bianca asks if that's why Katherine dislikes her Katherine strikes her. Baptista walks in at this moment
  • All of the suitors go to meet Baptista Minola. Germio with Lucentio dressed as a poor man, Petruchio with Hortensio disguised as a musician , Tranio dressed Lucentio and Biondello
  • Petruchio gets the opportunity to meet and converse with Katherine who her refers to as "Kate". While they are talking one of the first things Petruchio mentions was his intension to marry her
