  • The county attorney, Sheriff Peters, Mrs. Peters, Mr. Hale, and Mrs. Hale are all traveling over to the Wrights' to investigate a crime scene.
  • The men stand to one side to discuss the details of the crime scene and what happened. They recall the conversation with Mrs. Wright from the day before, going over her behavior. The men look around the house and notice that it is a mess. They think of the things women worry about as insignificant and the women are left to the side amongst themselves.
  • The men leave the women downstairs, going upstairs to look for clues of the death of Mr. Wright.
  • While the men are upstairs, the women look around the house and kitchen, noticing the mess and things left half finished. They end up finding clues like the messy sewing, preserves, half-filled sugar, a bird cage, and a dead bird.
  • The women think back of what they know about the Wrights. They talk about how Mrs. Wright used to always sing and that Mr. Wright would not like singing. From the clues and what they know, the women come to the conclusion that it was an abusive relationship, and he took the life out of Mrs. Wright and the bird.
  • The women decide to hide the evidence from the men because they understand where Mrs. Wright is coming from and sympathize with her. They don't want her to get arrested and go to jail for killing her abusive husband. The men don't find much upstairs and can't arrest anyone without evidence.
