  • In May 1521, Cortes and his followers attacked and conquered the Aztecs. Cortes then colonized the area and named it Nueva España (New Spain). By 1574, Spain controlled a large portion of the Aztec empire and had enslaved most of the indigenous population.

  • Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe, death to bad government, death to the gachupines!!
  • The highest class in this social structure are the Peinsulares. These are people born from Spain therefore they dominated social and political structure. Creoles are the second highest status. They are from latin decent. The Mixed raced people are the third class. Then comes the Native Americans which are the fourth class. Finally at the bottom are Enslaved Africans

  • The Peninsulares relaxed on the top of the social structure without a care in the world. The Creoles bitterly resented their second-class status. Meanwhile, a growing population of mestizos, people of Native American and European descent, and people of mixed African and European descent, were angry at being denied the status, wealth, and power that were available to whites. Native Americans suffered economic misery under the Spanish.
  • Hidalgo's Execution
  • On September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered a speech known as the Grito de Dolores at his church. The event became the start of the Mexican War of Independence and the Grito de Delores became the battle cry of the Mexican War of Independence.

  • When authorities moved to arrest him, he gathered together his followers and his parishioners and issued the “Grito de Dolores” on September 16, 1810. He quickly gathered an insurgent army that rampaged through central Mexico.
