  • Before the 1870's the Great plains was a was open range as no one had claimed the lands. An Indian family named the Stewarts moved and settled into the lands of the plains as their new home.
  • When the Homestead Act was announced it said that settlers who went to the west would be given 160 arcs of land for free if they farmed for 5 years, so it encourage settlers to move to the west.
  • The railroads helped to transport cattle and materials that were needed in the west, and it also eliminated conditions as before people who went to the west were isolated so it was difficult to get supplies or materials.
  • The new settlers who moved to the west started living in sod houses, and they also used bared wire in order to keep their cattle safe from predator's and also keep their farms safe.
  • Two ways that farmers were able to get access to water in the plains were through water wells or windmills, and they also used steel plows to to break through the soil to be able to plant crops.
  • Some effects of settlement was that the settlers and natives started to clash with each other, which then escalated in to Indian War, in which the natives and settlers fought each other and it lasted for 25 years.
