  • Newton's 1st law: with not net force acting upon it, an object in rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. This ball is staying at rest as no unbalanced forces are acting on it.
  • However, if I hit the ball, like I just did, that means that an unbalanced force was applied to the ball, causing it to not rest anymore, but move. Then the ball stays in motion, until it encounters another unbalanced force, which is the net of the goal. The net stops its motion until the ball falls to the ground and stops moving.
  • Now you might be asking about Newton's second law, and that is going to be explained in the next comic slides.
  • Newton's second law: The acceleration of an object is dependent upon the net force action upon the object and the mass of the object. Force= mass * acceleration.
  • Basically, which ball would go farther if I hit them both with the same force? The answer, is the soccer ball, as the bowling ball is more massive and dense than the soccer ball, thus it require more force to move it at the same speed as the soccer ball.
  • Now I have just kicked both balls with the same force, however the soccer ball went all the way into the goal, which the bowling ball didn't even pass inside the goal zone, so more massive object require more force to move. My foot hurts!
