  • Andrew Jackson negotiated a treaty with the Native Americans after the battle known as the Creek in Georgia. The treaty says that the Creek gave up 22 million acres of land to the government which was then sold in pieces to settlers.
  • Indian Removal Act
  • When Andrew Jackson became President, he gave the Native Americans two options: assimilate or adopt. They chose to assimilate, so they followed all of the white people ways to keep their land.
  • Worcester vs Georgia Supreme Court Case
  • The Cherokee land was valuable because it had gold. The Americans had discovered the gold and then the southern states passed a law allowing the Americans to take over the Native American land in Georgia.
  • Trail of Tears & Indian Territory
  • Jackson supported the southern state law that the Americans could go onto Native American land and take the land. Andrew Jackson approved another law that said the Native Americans were forced to moved to an area of land known as Oklahoma today. This area was known as Indian Territory.
  • Worcester vs Georgia was a Supreme Court case that said that Georgia had no right to interfere with the Cherokee. The Cherokee won the case but Jackson went around the Supreme Court and forced the Cherokee off their land anyway.
  • A result of 4,000 people died on the Trail of Tears from an illness or starvation. The soldiers made the Cherokee pay settlers for passing through farms and boatmen. By the time the tribe reached the Indian Territory, they didn't have much money left.
