  • It was a secret selection, made by the leaders of the community, the Committee of Elders, who took the responsibility so seriously that there were never even any jokes made about Assignments.
  • It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.#160;Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community twice.#160;But the aircraft a year ago had been different. It was not a squat, fat-bellied cargo plane but a needle-nosed single-pilot jet.
