- Rising Action: Sandy gives Frederick advice and a root for good luck.
- I don't really believe in that stuff, but since he's helped me so much, I'll just take it. It can't hurt.
- You have to go back, or you'll starve to death. Take this root, and no white man will beat you
- Climax: Covey tries to beat Frederick for running away, but Frederick decides he'll fight back and they fight for two hours straight.
- I'm not letting him hit me this time! I'm fighting back now.
- I've never had a slave fight back like this before! This kid's totally gonna finish me...
- Resolution/Denouement: Covey tells everyone that he beat Frederick terribly, even though Frederick definitely won their fight, but Frederick doesn't care. He has a new mindset now, and won't let any master of his ever beat him again.
- That's not what happened... but I don't care! I will never let a white man beat me without getting a fight out of me.
- Y'know, it's Frederick's own fault I beat him so much. The audacity he had, to lay hands on ME! I beat him and set him right, of course.
