  • The beginning of class!
  • mhm, I don't like where this is going...
  • y-x+93x+8y=-5
  • Class, Today we will be learning how to use substitution
  • OHH! I know about this unit.
  • Yea, no problem! If you know variables(Y's/X's)I'm pretty sure you'll be ok.
  • Substitution Learning/equation
  • y-x+93x+8y=-5
  • yea this shouldn't be too hard! Am I right?.....
  • Thanks, I now i can use a lot of help
  • I'm pretty sure Rhonda won't mind helping you out as well as Marcus!
  • Distribute means to multiple whatever is in the purenthasis with the number next to it so 8*x and 8*9!!!
  • Key words/Methods for equation
  • Substitution means to plug in, and foe this equation, were going to be plugging in the equation for variable (Y)
  • OH! and then after youplug inthe equation for the variable you will put together the equation like this. 3x+8(x+9)=-5then you will distribute.
  • Ok, Let's start. Malissa, why don't you start us off with the vocab we've been talking about!
  • 3x+8x=11x+27=-5 and then after you set your equation up like this then you can get rid of your variable by getting rid of the 5 first by adding.
  • In this unit, students will be learning the value of using the method of substitution with an equation.
  • Students Learning
  • You guys don't need me....
  • 3x+8(x+9)=-53x+8x+27=-5
  • I believe next you will combine like terms. combine like terms means when you have two variables on the same side, you want to get rid of them by adding or subtracting. In this case you will be adding.
  • Of course. You were looking for the x and y. so we found our x which was -7 so now we had to plug it into y=x+9 , -7 replaces x
  • Two student's sounds familiar with this method and would be kind enough to help another student that may struggle out.
  • Student responses/ Teachers explainatory
  • and now with that being said, you will take your y=x+9 equation and for the x you will plug in -7 so y=-7+9 which is 2
  • Since Malissa is really familiar with the termDistribution she will identify the term to the rest of the class. As Malissa is done, Rhonda follows up with her knowledge of knowing what Substitutionis as well as Marcus putting in his input.
  • detailed information
  • For any equation like this, you will always be giving an x and a y, which is why you will be solving for both. That is called your solution. Even ifx was first you plug in for the variable. It's never just a one step problem. Therefor, since we had got-7 and 9, x always comes firstwhich was -7. so to put it into solution form it would be solution= (-7,9)
  • Now that Rhonda set the bar to understand the process, Marcus will now tune in with his knowledge by giving us the next step. He also uses a vocabulary word in his description ( combine like terms) and defines it as well!
  • ahh! so, where do we go from here?
  • Oh and then the 5 on the left will cancel out, 27+-5=-77. So, that means bring down the 11x=-77 and divide by 11 and you'll get -7
  • Mr. Gibson explained the second part to the two step equation. The students seemed confused because they thought they were done and mastered it.
  • wait whaa ....there's more!
  • Mr. Gibson explains to his students that there is always another step to an equation like this. even when you use substitution or elimination method. it will always be two answers because your solving for x and y.
