- "All day I had been riding on horseback through country with little life or beauty; and in the early evening I came within view of the House of Usher"

- "The illness of the lady Madeline had long been beyond the help of her doctors"
- The narrator rides to visit his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, who has told him he has a strange sickeness.
- "We carried her body to its resting place. The vault in which we placed it was small and dark, and in ages past, it must've seen strange and bloody things"
- The narrator notices his friend has changed and now looks very unusual, with a strange light in his eye and white skin.
- "I will read and you shall listen and thus we will live through this fearful night together"
- The narrator first notices Roderick's sister and sees how frail she looks. He is also told that she is going to die soon from an illness of her own that's untreatable.
- "There was blood upon her white dress, and the signs of her terrible efforts to escape were upon every part of her thin form."
- Roderick and the narrator carry lady Madeline's body to the vault to bury her. The vault is dark, cold, and small.
- Neither Roderick or the narrator could sleep while it was storming outside, so the narrator read a book to Roderick. While reading, they hear sounds that sound the same as the ones described in the book.
- Lady Madeline breaks free from her coffin and the vault and shows up at the door bloody and beaten up. Roderick claimed he was able to hear her breaking free, and opened the door. Madeline fell on Roderick, and the shock of it killed him. The narrator then ran away as the House of Usher cracked and fell into the ground.
