- The emperor then finds a woman, Fujitsubo, who closely resembles Kiritsubo, and invites her to court to be his first consort. He married Fujitsubo, who resembles his late wife.
- As a young man, Genji falls in love with Fujitsubo, despite being married to Aoi, who has chosen for him and with whom he does not feel compatible. Then eventually bears him a son. They manage to hide the secret of the child’s paternity from the Emperor

After another change in emperor, Genji is called back to court and takes both Lady Akashi and his daughter with him. Genji’s son by Lady Fujitsubo becomes Emperor; Genji also arranges for the daughter of one of his former lovers, Lady Rokujo, to become the new Emperor’s first wife.
