  • Growing up Pablo's family was very poor and at the age of 11 his younger sister died from starvation. As Pablo got older he did a lot of manual labor to help his family get money.
  • When Pablo turned 26 he decided to travel to the U.S. for a better life leaving his friends and family behind.
  • For Pablo, moving to the U.S. was ideal because of labor demands and to escape the political unrest in Mexico.
  • The voyage over to Texas was by ship. The journey was long and the living conditions were poor causing many people to die.
  • Once arriving in Texas, Pablo travled to California where he found a manual labor job reconstructing buildings.
  • In 1849 there was gold found in California. There was gold everywhere even along some of the roads and he was able to collect some because there was no law regarding property rights.
  • Because of all of the people coming for gold in California it became over populated. So, Pablo decided to pack up and move to New York where he got married to a young english woman.
  • By the age of 47 Pablo had started a small construction business with the gold from California. He also settled down into a two bedroom home with his wife and 2 sons.
