  • Canada was Europe's main source of food and supplies during the war, without them Europe forces would surely starve. The battle of the Atlantic began in September 1939.
  • The Advantage of German U-boats
  • *Tschüss means "bye" or "bye bye"
  • Germans wanted to cut supply lines for Europe, so they used U-boats to hunt down allied ships crossing the North Atlantic Ocean.

  • Canada entered the war with 13 ships and 13 000 members, by the end of the war they had 375 ships and 110 000 members
  • So the Allies attempted to protect the cargo ships by having convoys guarded by naval vessels . During the voyage Canadian ships & planes protected convoys while in the mid-Atlantic British took escort duties.

  • The U-boats had the upper hand, during 1942, the German U-boats sank 143 allied cargo ships.

  • Mid 1943, the allies took a turn to their advantage, with better trained and experienced crews, stronger submarine-tracking tactics, and improved technology. Also with a growth of the Navy & Air forces.

  • The end of the battle was May 1945, a total of 6 long years, known as the longest battle in WW2 . Canada played a key role in this battle, with beginning small, to growing to one of the largest navies in the world.
