  • Cloelia Introduces Herself
  • Cloelia and Stories
  • Cloelia and Stories, cont.
  • Cloelia introduces herself as a girl who lived happily with her parents for 10 years. However, she is no longer with them; she is in a dangerous enemy camp now. She remains brave because she is a Roman citizen, and they are brave by nature. She proceeds to tell the story of how she got to this state.
  • War and Lucretia
  • Cloelia was not always necessarily happy with her parents. She didn't like making clothes, which was expected of her. One day, she asked her mother to tell her a story of a girl who did not make clothes. She was told the story of Camilla; there once was a king who was expelled from his kingdom, and he fled with his infant daughter. He came across a body of water and needed a plan to get his daughter across. He made a vow to the godddess Diana for help.
  • The Story of Kallisto
  • Camilla was indeed safely past the water, and she kept her modesty and remained a virgin like the goddess Diana (it was part of the vow her father made to keep her safe). Cloelia is impressed with the story of Camilla, and wanted to be courageous and modest just like her. However, she is reminded that the story is not over. Camilla was a warrior who perished in battle. Cloelia is sad over the demise of Camilla, and reiterates that she does not like making clothes. She is sarcastically asked if she would rather walk around naked.
  • Final Chapters we Read
  • One day while making clothes, Cloelia's father announces that war is approaching. The king's son, Sextus, committed a crime and is not facing any penalty for it. He dishonored Lucretia, who is now dead. They are sad over the death of Lucretia. Cloelia's father does not initially want her to hear the facts. Lucretia killed herself after being raped. Cloelia is confused.
  • Cloelia is told a story on the subject of vows. Kallisto was a woman who vowed to remain a virgin, and she stayed in the woods with the group led by Diana. However, Jupiter noticed and took a liking to her. He disguised himself and assaulted Kallisto. She was then cast out of the woods by Diana.
  • The Romans were very angry about what happened to Lucretia, and Tarquinius (the king) and Sextus fled from the city. They vowed that Rome would not have a king again.
