  • T.L.O, a 14-year-old freshman at Piscataway High School, was caught smoking in the school bathroom by a teacher. The principal asked to see her purse and found a pack of cigarettes and much more. The police were then called, and her case was sent to trial. T.L.O was founded guilty of possession of marijuana and put on probation.
  • When T.L.O tried to say that the search of her purse violated her Fourth Amendment, the protection against unreasonable searches, the supreme court went on the school's behalf. Schools give you privacy, but they also have to maintain a safe learning environment for all students.
  • T.L.O is the landmark case on search and seizure at school. School officials can now search a student's property if they reasonably suspect a school rule has been broken or the student is committing a crime.
