  • Sikhs were discontent due to religious policies. Guru Tegh Bahadur was captured and taken to Delhi. He was given the option to embrace Islam or to face death. He was beheaded upon refusal. Mughals attacked fort of Anandpur, captured the two sons of Guru Gobind Singh, and bricked them alive as they refused to embrace Islam.

  • Meanwhile, the Marathas had become sufficiently powerful. Shivaji was their capable leader. He captured several fortresses. In 1674 he was crowned as an independent King. He was glorified with the title Chhatrapati.
