- Bud enters the library hoping to find Miss Hill, perhaps she can help him. As always, he notices the smell of the library. He looks around the library, searching for Miss Hill. And when he can't seem to find her, he speaks to a librarian at the counter,only to find out she has married and moved to Chicago. He returns to his tree, disappointed, for he is now truly alone.
- Bud is sleeping when he is awakened by Bugs, a boy from the Home. They walk to Hooverville, where they get something to eat in exchange for cleaning. Bud met Deza Malone,, a girl whose dad has been gone for seven years. Everyone realizes the train is trying to leave early but when it starts moving several people get left behind including Bud. The train leaves taking Bugs with it.
- Bud began to believe Herman E. Calloway really was his father, for the belongings he had of his mother were items of his. He lived in Grand Rapids. Bud returned to the library and asked the librarian if he could borrow a book to find out how long it would take him to walk to Grand Rapids. It was going to take him 24 hours, so he set out that night in hope to find his father.
